Why is Fluency Important?

Fluent readers read words quickly, easily and accurately. Because they don't need to focus on decoding every word, they can devote their full attention to comprehension, and become fully absorbed in the world of the story. Fluent reading in chapter books opens up the doors of great literature to young readers.

How Does This Program Build Fluency?

In this program, young readers build fluency in three ways. First, students build the strong long-word decoding skills needed for fluent reading. Second, they apply these skills in independent reading in books at the appropriate level of difficulty. Finally, students build fluency through oral reading exercises, learning to read more smoothly and naturally, and paying careful attention to punctuation and other textual clues.
